Planning and building your website

Careful planning is the key to successful website design. Whether your website is simple or complex, the main consideration is functionality - what are you actually trying to achieve through having this website? As web designers, we'll obviously give you advice but it's important that we're both clear about what we're trying to achieve. In terms of web design, do you want:

  • An inexpensive "brochure" site web presence to guide people toso they can find out a little bt more about you and your products/services? Such a site may not be too reliant on search engines to generate leads, but may still serve a number of very useful functions indeed
  • An information-rich, dynamic site which enables users to interact and choose from large volumes of products in a database?
  • A site geared for high search engine ranking, whose main goal is to generate enquiries from users surfing the web for products and services?

Ultimately, these factors will all have a bearing on how the site is built and the cost involved. But do be clear on what you are expecting your site to do for you.

You'll also need to consid
er:

Your target audience
Who are your customers? Are they predominantly young, old, male, female? What sorts of information will they want to see on your website? Putting yourself in your customers shoes is one of the most important things you can ever do in marketing terms. Your site needs to appeal to these customers more than anyone else.

Website design style
It's important that your website has a design and theme that mirrors your company image consistently. Think about your house style - what colours should and shouldn't feature in your site, should the feel be modern, contemporary, classic, off-the-wall etc.

Overall website content
Roughly how many pages will your site consist of and what content do you want on each page? (Bear in mind it can always be developed and added to). What information will be useful for your customers and prospects to have access to? What additional information might you put on your site that will add value and interest? (Lots of pages of useful information can also add value, help you set up incoming links and help raise your search engine ranking).

Take a look at some of your competitors sites! What do you like about their sites? (We don't advocate plagiarism, but you'll be guaranteed to get some good pointers). And brainstorm. Ask customers, colleagues, friends, family what they think should be on your site. Again, we guarantee you'll get some good ideas you hadn't thought of.

We'll also advise you on certain inclusions that may help our site gain a better search engine ranking.
